Lifestyle newborn shoots

My photography business has been running for over two years now, and it felt like the right time to expand my portfolio into newborn photography. As ever my inspiration for this was my own family, with the birth of my son Hugo in July this year. This gave me the opportunity to apply my photography skills to a newborn session. Not only did this help me gain experience, but I ended up with a lovely set of images for my wife and I to treasure.

With my newfound confidence in being able to produce some quality newborn images, I went out to the local community to find families willing to let me photograph them in exchange for some free digital photos. Two families got in touch and I arranged a suitable date for coming to their homes. Although nervous at first, I stayed composed in the thought that I have gained some valuable experience in my photography to date, and know how to capture families. Both sessions were easy going and fun, mixing up composition and being creative in my approach.

One of my favourite photos from the two shoots was of a baby with her big brother.

I found the moment touching and went for a monochrome colour to enhance that special feeling to the image.

I’m at the stage in my life that many of my friends are also having children, most of which live in the Sussex area. One of my best friends in Horsham had recently had his second daughter, so I took the opportunity to meet her and take some lovely shots. The one that stood out for me was off my friend with both his daughters, with their natural expressions. In particular I love the way the little one is looking up at both of them - i’d love to know what she is thinking!

My newborn baby photos are very much keeping with the natural, lifestyle approach that I take with my family sessions. Many people like the more posed shots of babies in baskets and with props, however I think natural documentary-style photos show more emotion and connect better with the viewer.

Now with four newborn shoots under my belt, I feel my confidence growing and a desire to continue the learning journey in capturing this special time for families. I have added an area to my website with my newborn portfolio which you can browse here. Please get in touch if you would like me to photograph your own family and the new arrival.
